Land prices rising as rich move in

The cost of farmland reached record levels during the first half of the year as increased demand from city slickers, investors and farmers pushed up prices. Rural prices rising The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors said the average cost of land soared by 22.6% during the first six months of 2007, the highest increase since the survey began. Londoners armed with record City bonuses had continued to drive up demand for farmland with property attached to it, it said. At the same time there was increased competition from institutional and foreign investors, with farmland being bought up by Danish and Irish farmers, keen to take advantage of British prices, which remain among the lowest in Europe.
